Charles J. Vater
Chuck is a shareholder and co-chair of the Estates and Trust Group. He represents a number of closely-held and family-owned businesses and professional corporations with a focus on business succession planning. He advises the firm’s business clients on techniques and strategies for wealth accumulation and transfer. As part of his practice, Chuck represents individuals in their admission as partners or shareholders in closely-held businesses. This includes negotiation of pre-incorporation and shareholder contracts as well as buy/sell, employment and deferred compensation agreements.
In the area of personal estate planning, Chuck focuses on structuring and implementing estate plans which incorporate estate, gift, generation skipping and income tax savings techniques. Chuck’s estate administration practice is focused on the timely and efficient settling of decedents’ estates, ranging from single-asset, one-beneficiary estates to multi-million dollar estates containing closely-held businesses and complex dispositive schemes. This background allows Chuck to advise the firm’s personal and business clients on the best ways to transfer their assets with a minimum amount of disruption and tax impact.
Areas of Practice: Chuck’s main areas of concentration are estate and business succession planning with additional concentrations in estate and trust administrations.
Articles and Presentations: Chuck speaks on a regular basis to professional and business organizations and writes articles on current and topical subjects for a number of publications both for the business and legal communities.
Honors and Awards: Chuck has been selected by peers for inclusion in The Best Lawyers in America® and as a Pennsylvania Super Lawyer®.
Memberships and Activities: Chuck is a fellow of The American College of Trust and Estate Counsel (ACTEC® ). He has served as the President of the Board of The Children’s Home of Pittsburgh and Lemieux Family Center. He is also a past president of the Estate Planning Council of Pittsburgh and past chairman of the Probate and Trust Section of the Allegheny County Bar Association. He has served as the managing shareholder of the firm and currently serves on its Board of Directors. Chuck also serves as the chair of the firm’s Estates and Trusts Practice Group.
Jurisdictions: Chuck is admitted to practice in all Pennsylvania State courts, the Federal Courts of the Western District of Pennsylvania and the Third Circuit Court of Appeals.
Education and Background: Chuck graduated summa cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa from the University of Notre Dame in 1971 and obtained his law degree magna cum laude from the University of Pittsburgh School of Law in 1975 where he was an editor of the Law Review and a member of the Order of the Coif.
