David M. Sawyer
David
M. Sawyer, a shareholder with the firm, serves as Co-Chair of the Employee
Benefits Practice Group. He was recognized as one of the top young lawyers in
Pennsylvania by Pennsylvania Super Lawyers - Rising Stars Edition in 2006.
Examples of legal services that David provides include:

Design and drafting of:

qualified retirement plans, such as traditional
defined benefit pension plans, cash balance pension plans, 401(k) plans, money
purchase pension plans, Taft Hartley Plans, and employee stock ownership plans
(or ESOPs),

retirement plans for non-profit and governmental
entities, such as 403(b) and 457(b) plans;
-
nonqualified deferred compensation plans and
other arrangements subject to Code Section 409A, including executive
compensation programs and 457(f) plans,

equity-based compensation plans, such as
incentive stock option plans, nonqualified stock option plans, and phantom
stock plans, and
-
equity-based compensation plans, such as
incentive stock health and welfare plans and fringe benefit plans;

Counseling clients on the administration and
operation of all types of employee benefit plans, including Qualified Domestic
Relations Orders and compliance with the requirements of the Employee
Retirement Income Security Act (ERISA) and the Internal Revenue Code;

Counseling fiduciaries on meeting their
fiduciary responsibilities under the ERISA;

Reviewing and negotiating investment management
and administrative services agreements;

Representing sponsors, administrators, and
fiduciaries in matters involving government agencies such as the IRS and
Department of Labor;

Counseling clients on the benefit implications
of mergers and acquisitions; and
-
Advice on specific issues such as fiduciary
liability, fiduciary liability insurance coverage and withdrawal liability
under Taft Hartley plans.
Career and Educational
Background
David earned both his law and
undergraduate degrees from The George Washington University. While in law
school, he interned with the Groom Law Firm in Washington, DC. He formerly
practiced employee benefits law with Buchanan Ingersoll & Rooney and Reed Smith.
