Michael A. Cassidy, a shareholder in
the firm’s Business and Finance Department, concentrates his practice in health
care law, chairs the firm’s Health Care Practice Group, and is a member of the
Employee Benefits Practice Group. His practice as a health law attorney includes the fundamental business
transactions relating to the formation and governance of healthcare entities,
including PCs, LLCs, non-profit corporations, partnerships, and integrated
delivery systems. Mike has extensive experience in third party reimbursement,
managed care contracting, fraud and abuse, medical staff and credentialing
issues, corporate compliance, and tax exempt organization issues. Mike’s
healthcare experience also includes HIPAA privacy and transaction issues.
Mike was named as one of Pennsylvania’s Super Lawyers for Health Care Law for
2005, 2006, 2007 and 2008 and received the Pennsylvania Bar Association's "Excellence in Health Care
Law Award" for 2003. Mike is the publisher of the Med Law Blog (www.medlawblog.com),
the firm's health law blog.
Mike is a member of the American Health Lawyers Association and chairs its
Medical staff, Physician,
and Credentialing and Peer Review (CPR) practice group. He is a past chairman and current Council member of the
Allegheny County Bar Association Healthlaw Section and a past board member of
the Pennsylvania Society of Healthcare Attorneys. He is also a member of the
Pennsylvania Bar Institute's Health Law Advisory Committee. He has written and
lectured on healthlaw issues for the American Health Lawyers Association, the
Pennsylvania Bar Institute, the Pennsylvania Institute of Certified Public
Accountants, and numerous state and county medical societies and bar
associations. Mike is the author of “Immunity for Credentialing Decisions Under
Federal and State Law” from the AHLA Health Lawyers’ Expert Series, a co-author
of the Peer Review Hearing Guidebook, also an AHLA publication, chapters on
Health Care Contracting and Business Crimes for the Matthew Bender Health Law
Treatise, and for the Lexis Health Care Compliance Manual. Mike also served on
the Pennsylvania Bar Association's Health Care Malpractice Task Force.
Mike also advises closely-held business clients on business formation issues,
tax and employee benefit issues, corporate governance and stock transactions,
mergers and acquisitions, partnership and joint venture issues, contract issues,
and succession and estate planning issues.
Mike is licensed to practice in Pennsylvania and West Virginia and is admitted
to the U.S. Supreme Court, the U.S. Tax Court, the Pennsylvania Supreme Court
and various federal courts. He received his B.A. from Brown University and his
J.D. from the University of Pittsburgh School of Law. He has an AV rating in the
Martindale-Hubbell Law Directory, which is the highest rating for legal ability
and ethical standards awarded by this national directory of lawyers.
